Rosemount Australian Fashion Week showcases the Spring Summer 08/09 collections from designers from Australia and the Asia Pacific. In Part 1 I focus on colour, print and the perfect summer dress. Don't forget - if you click on the images they will open up nice and big.

There will be pink party dresses aplenty this summer. For Sunday beer garden excursions either LIFEwithBIRD's fluid long sleeved dress or Lee Mathew’s long berry red shirt, worn effortlessly over shorts would do nicely. Illionaire’s kitschy pastel minis rekindle my perverse romance with the childhood-me, making me remember Care Bears, Mr. Whippy and numerous junk-food bingeing at the neighborhood swimming pool. Antipodium’s super-A-line skirt in a sheer sherbet pink is offset with heavy work boots (blundstones!) and a round neck tee knotted at the front in true nineties style. This kind of makes me want to go and put on a somewhat garish party outfit. But mostly I just feel like an ice-cream.

“Florals? For Spring? Groundbreaking.” Miranda Priestly be damned! It looks like there will be an abundance of flowerprint this summer. Most impressive of the bunch is Marnie Skillings; her wideleg pants, worn brilliantly with a red bodysuit are charming enough but her floor length knotted dress is inspiring me to find some oversized 90s floral from Savers and knot my way to success. (Speaking of which, you can expect a knot-centric diatribe in the near future - a celebration of my new awesome/ugly Ellery dress).
Luella style liberty prints, teamed with knits, tights and a Ghost World cat mask is perfect inspiration for winter florals but the desired look for summer, in my head, is total 70s Americana; muted neutrals or pale blue in a light, matte silk, perhaps with slight frill sleeves and maybe even a hemline that ventures below the mid-thigh. Or if i'm feeling adventurous? Below the knee. Fingers crossed one exactly like this materialises in front of me on a future shopping adventure.

Loathe to some, welcomed by me, the resurgence of tie-dye was seen recently at Karen Walker who showed skirts and pants indigo and crimson. Kym Ellery's gorgeous L'Ile Noir collection, which she says sprung from her love of Hair the musical, is heavy in 70s fringing and super subtle tie-dyes. Still to this very day I still have a soft spot for Lover’s oversized (and relatively unpopular) hippy-dippy tie dye t-shirt from last winter. I’ve been promising myself a DIY dylon experiment since 4ever.
This season, stormy midnight dyes at Friedrich Grey and Jessie Hill add a sense of drama to the otherwise frou-frou heavy offerings of RAFW 08. Nicola Finetti opts for a more restrained version of this trend boasting an off the shoulder mini with a skirt of fresh cascading pleats in cool blues. Ruffles and fringing, done right at TV, are exactly the silly details that bring the ideal summer party dress to a whole other level of fun. Plus the right shade of blue would go ridiculously well with glowy summer-skin (read: tan). Also my favourite Derwent colour has always been Smalt Blue. And I love wearing blue suede shoes when singin' the blues and looking for Blue's Clues.
